Flevoland is the world's largest hydraulic project in which land was withdrawn from the sea. Dry feet on that land seems obvious, but we owe that to our dykes and pumping stations. Besides dry feet, shipping traffic is important. Our lock gates take care of that, allowing ships to move from one water level to another. Cargo ships and recreational traffic can reach Flevoland easily this way. With as much as 5 metres difference in water level in some places, this is quite impressive.
Our seven pumping stations ensure that Flevoland stays dry, despite the influence of rain and seepage water (which flows through the dykes). This makes it possible to keep a piece of land that lies an average of five metres below sea level from flooding. You will find the seven pumping stations spread throughout the province, but always on the coast, so that excess water can be drained into open water.
Below are some of our locks. Are you sailing in or around Flevoland and want to know where all the locks are? Then download the app Varen Flevoland (Boating in Flevoland, available in Dutch only). It allows you to sign up for a passage on all bridges and locks operated remotely by the province. The app also provides information on bridge and lock opening times, clearance heights and widths and current obstructions.
