Leg 4 of the Pioneer Trail, a long-distance walking route spanning over 200 kilometres, takes you through the Noordoostpolder and across the former island of Schokland. You’ll traverse a landscape where plots, ditches, roads, and rows of trees have been laid out in precise straight lines. Until 1932, Schokland was a true island in the Zuiderzee. Today, it rises above the surrounding polder landscape like an island on dry land.
Along the way, there are several locations where you can pause to explore, grab a bite to eat, or enjoy a drink. Take your time to walk this stage at a leisurely pace and fully enjoy the experience.
