The Gene Bank hiking trail is a walk through the Sources Forest in Roggebotzand. Here, Staatsbosbeheer collects the genetic heritage of native trees and shrubs. For strengthening existing, vulnerable nature, but also for new nature.
Route
The route starts at the car park of pancake house Het Grote Kabouterbos (the Big Leprechaun Forest) and is marked in yellow. Dogs are allowed on the leash. There are information panels along the route to introduce you to this special piece of natural heritage in the Roggebotzand. Gene bank
This gene bank secures original Dutch trees and shrubs for the future. Human intervention has fragmented original plant populations and ‘loners’ can hardly find each other anymore. Exchanging genetic material, which keeps the species strong, then becomes difficult. By bringing trees and shrubs together here, natural pollination takes place again, allowing fruits and seeds to develop. All those same species together also make for extra rich flowering. Thus, the gene bank not only secures species, the seeds of those species also become stronger and stronger.
Research on original genetic material took place across the Netherlands country. For now, 50 native species have been secured in the gene bank. In total, some 18,500 trees and shrubs have been planted, as many as 28 hectares, and the number is increasing. The genebank is accessible between sunrise and sunset and only on roads and paths.
