Flevoland Jungle - Zeewolde
The Horsterwold is the largest continuous deciduous forest in Western Europe. Thanks to the fertile clay soil on which the forest was planted, the trees grow at an incredible rate. In this dense forest, it’s hard to imagine that less than 75 years ago, the turbulent waters of the Zuiderzee flowed here. The good news for you as a mountain biker: the dedicated volunteers from MTB Zeewolde have laid out a seventeen-kilometre track through the forest, allowing you to enjoy it to the fullest. The volunteer group maintains this route well, so there’s little chance of ending up on overgrown paths.

Starting from the car park at Group Camping De Banken, you immediately dive into the Flevoland jungle. In the summer, it’s lush and green. Along the water, there’s a series of berms, followed by a succession of humps where you push your bike over them as if on a pump track. In dry conditions, the clay provides a perfect surface; for wet conditions, the problem areas have been improved with granulate.
In the dense forest, it feels like you’re riding through a tunnel, and in the open spaces, you could imagine yourself in the Black Forest or the Veluwe. The highlight comes at the end, with a passage along the beach of the Nuldernauw, where in the summer, you’ll be riding past sunbathers. You can wash off your bike at the harbour and finish your ride with a snack or drink at Brasserie ’t Wolderwijd. On the sunny terrace, you can hold onto that beach feeling a little longer.
