For centuries, Schokland was a densely populated island in the Zuiderzee. But as the sea level rose, Schokland shrank, and life became tougher for the Schokker population. After repeated storm rampages, King Willem III ordered the last villages to be evacuated in 1859. Schokland faded from memory. Schokland was suddenly not an island any longer.
Today, Schokland is appreciated both near and far. The former island is the first Dutch monument to be recognised by Unesco and placed on the World Heritage Site list.

On the northern tip of the island, near the old harbour, there is the national monument the Lichtwachterswoning (lighthouse keeper’s house). This comfortably furnished space has a huge meeting table that can sit 14 to 16 people. The upstairs room can be used for additional space.
Gasthuis de Lichtwachter is a delightful place to be with its lovely prospects and is a historical site in the Noordoostpolder.
