The impressive 'Lepelaarplassen' nature reserve is located adjacent to the Oostvaardersdijk. The area is named after the large colony of 'lepelaars' (spoonbills) who have made this their home since the 1970s. Other frequently observed birds here include great crested grebes, wild swans, great egrets and cormorants, but there are 300 and more different varieties of (migratory or otherwise) bird to spot.
You will find the Natte Graslanden (wet grasslands) south-west of the lakes an excellent location for bird-watching. A map is available from De Trekvogel visitors centre, clearly showing all the local walks.
The organisation ‘Het Flevo-landschap’ (The Flevo Landscape) has recently created three new view points in the Natte Graslanden area of the Lepelaarplassen nature reserve. The viewpoints are dotted along the twelve kilometres cycle route bordering the Lepelaarplassen, which starts at De Trekvogel visitors centre.
