Island on dry land
It was 150 years ago when the island was evacuated because of the relentless flooding. When the Noordoostpolder was drained, Schokland became 'an island on dry land'. Around the world, Schokland is considered a symbol of the Dutch battle against water.
Discover its history at Museum Schokland.

At the heart of the former island lies Museum Schokland. From the distance you can clearly see that Schokland was once an island. The old church next to the museum stands out like a beacon high above the new land. The many archaeological finds on the island transport you on a journey extending from the last Ice Age until the present. That is how far back the history of Schokland goes.

The Gesteentetuin
The Gesteentetuin is located a stone’s throw from the Museum. There are stones here that are millions of years old. The special walking route through the garden leads you past these ancient relics. Children are encouraged to dig for treasure and go on scavenger hunts. Exciting! The visitors’ centre in the Gesteentetuin is an ideal starting point for fun walking and cycling routes and excursions that will reveal the entire island to you.
