In Almere Pampus, five intersecting lines form a strange script-like symbol in the landscape. Three narrow canals, a pedestrian path, and a strip of black gravel with a sculpture made of aluminium walls make up the Land Art project Polderland Garden of Love and Fire by architect Daniel Libeskind.
One of Spain’s greatest mystics and poets, Juan de la Cruz, inspired Libeskind with his poem The Living Flame of Love.
In Polderland Garden of Love and Fire, the lines connect people from different places and times. The three canals symbolise the imaginary connection between three cities: Salamanca, the city where Juan de la Cruz studied; Berlin, where Libeskind was living and working at the time; and Almere, the location of the artwork.
